A Guardian Will Come From The North

NIGHT RAIDERS – a film by Danis Goulet – SPOILERS

Waseese (Brooklyn Letexier-Hart) takes aim at a bird with the idea of turning it into food. She will decide to listen to it instead.

Beyond it’s timely political message, NIGHT RAIDERS is an excellent bit of science fiction that vividly illustrates the suggestion that technology may be evolving into a form that is more compatible with the natural world.

The very first scene goes a long way toward defining the two main characters. In it, Waseese (Brooklyn Letexier-Hart) is about to use a slingshot to turn a bird into her dinner but decides not to and instead whispers something to it in Cree. Her mother Niska (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) asks her “Why don’t you kill it?” and she responds “I was listening to it.” Her mother is a little confused at this and says, to no one in particular, “It won’t get us fed.” Continue reading →

TIN CAN – directed by Seth A Smith – SPOILERS

Anna Hopkins - Tin Can

Fret (Anna Hopkins)

At the start of things we hear a newscaster (voiced by Shelley Thompson) saying: “Since its May discovery, the fungal infection has quickly swept across the Maritime provinces and Quebec. Although no related deaths have been confirmed, researchers are racing to assess the full risks associated with the pathogen. Now, one in twenty-five Canadians is living with the untreatable disease.” Later it is explained that the pathogen is called Coral and, like a slime mould, can live as a single cell or combine to form more complex structures. Its spores are heavy, so it spreads mostly through direct contact, and eventually forms a casing over the entire body. After that, Coral begins to change its host. (We are not told into what.) CONTROL – a film by James Mark – SPOILERS

Sara Mitich - Control

Eileen (Sara Mitich)

On a sunny afternoon, a five-year-old girl (Evie Loiselle) sits in the sand by the sea and sings “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” A woman appears, and the scene is intercut with snippets of gunfire and men in black. “Increment and initialize, Phase One Commencing” a female voice says, and Eileen (Sara Mitich) wakes up. The disembodied voice tells her: “Move the pencil. Complete this task within the allotted time.” Unable to get more information from the voice, she decides to move the pencil, which is across the room on a table, but has difficulty using her legs, as though walking is something she hadn’t done in a while. Once the pencil is moved, Eileen is rendered unconscious, and she dreams. Continue reading →
