ASTRID & LILLY SAVE THE WORLD – Season 1 Episode 1 – SPOILERS

Jana Morrison and Samantha Aucoin

Accidental monster hunters Lilly and Astrid bring to mind pleasant memories of Amy and Raquel in the 2016 miniseries CRAZYHEAD

Astrid (Jana Morrison) and Lilly (Samantha Aucoin) are high school students whose unusual hobby is spying on their classmates after school. Their hero is Olivia Benson, Mariska Hargitay’s character on LAW & ORDER:SVU, and their investigations seem to be an attempt to discover and imitate what makes other kids popular. Lilly’s younger sister Piper (Maddie Hemeon) tells her about a party and Astrid and Lilly decide to crash it. After being picked on by the invited guests for a while they tell Tate (Kolton Stewart) he’s a monster, and he suggests they look in a mirror. After leaving the party, Lilly begins to question whether or not she actually is a monster. In a fit of despair/outrage at their situation, Astrid and Lilly accidentally cast a spell. They don’t realize what they’ve done, but when Tate turns up missing the next day they go hunting for clues as to what happened to him. Continue reading →

ASTRID & LILLY SAVE THE WORLD – Season 1 Episode 2 – SPOILERS

Sheila McCarthy

Sally (Sheila McCarthy), as seen through Lilly’s camera lens.

McCarthy is also Cheryl Gulliver in Natalie Krinsky‘s romantic comedy THE BROKEN HEARTS GALLERY.

Astrid’s exuberance over successfully dispatching last episode’s monster gets the better of her. She screams her happiness to the heavens and a rift opens up above the entrance to Pine Academy High School, dousing Principal Varshidi (Marvin Ishmael) and his assistant Michelle (Megan Hutchings) with what appears to be dirty water. (While messy, the suspension of black material is apparently non-toxic, and not particularly smelly.) Last episode, Astrid and Lilly’s intense outpouring of emotion created an inter-dimensional portal. This time, with a lesser degree of emotional turbulence, a tiny, temporary rip in the fabric of space is created, just enough to let a splash of unidentified liquid through). It was not mentioned, but it is possible that Varshidi and Knight should be monitored for latent ill effects of the stuff.

Principal Varshidi and his assistant Michelle are doused with extra-dimensional slop

Amateur astronomer Eggs Walczak (Michael McCreary) observes a looping cosmic string through his telescope, and calculates that it is directly over coordinates 41.3684 North & 82.1079 West. He corners Astrid and Lilly, tells them he knows they’re up to something, and offers them the information. Google maps says those coordinates represent a spot within Elyria, Ohio (just outside of Cleveland). Continue reading →

ASTRID & LILLY SAVE THE WORLD – Season 1 Episode 3 – SPOILERS

Fabian O'Keefe

Fabian O’Keefe as the janitor who inadvertently scares away The Timoring

Brutus (Olivier Renaud) decides to help Astrid and Lilly conquer their fears with tactics likely borrowed from THE PINK PANTHER‘s Cato (but instead of randomly attacking, he just pops up unexpectedly with the notion of startling them). The next monster the duo must face is The Timoring, which feasts on fear and confronts its victims with that which they fear most. Astrid and Lilly are suspicious of Brutus’ motives for helping them and ask several times for clarification of that. Late in the episode, he produces identification saying that he is “from a long line of inter-dimensional monster hunter mentors as part of an organization called The Portal Protectorate“. He goes on to say that Portal Protectorate agents are trained from hatchlings to monitor the borders between worlds, and to step in if there’s a breach. (In his dimension, it seems that humanoids are oviparous.) The question is, why didn’t he show them that ID in the first place? Continue reading →
