Mid-First Season Thoughts on Y: The Last Man

Area 33 Posted on 13 October 2021 by Whycocomagh19 December 2022

SPOILERS

Jess Salgueiro and Juliana Canfield

The President’s assistant, Christina Flores (Jess Salgueiro) watching over Yorick’s ex Beth (Juliana Canfield) who is not privy to knowledge of Yorick’s survival. Beth turned down Yorick’s proposal of marriage just before The Event, and seems to be involved in some sort of ad hoc political activity.

The premise is simple. All male mammals drop dead at roughly the same time. Smaller mammals seem to be affected first. Israel (one of the three countries other than the United States mentioned so far in the show) is affected a short time before Washington. (This is a major change from the comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, which had every mammal with a Y chromosome die at exactly the same moment.) In the televised version, two stories only loosely connected to one another run concurrently. The first is the quest for the cause of it, which is undertaken by geneticist Dr. Allison Mann (Diana Bang), Yorick (Ben Schnetzer) and his Capuchin monkey Ampersand (the only two survivors with a Y chromosome), along with Agent 355 (Ashley Romans), whose job it is to guide them safely on their journey. Y:THE LAST MAN – Season 1 Episode 8 – SPOILERS

Marin Ireland and Sydney Meyer

Nora (Marin Ireland) finds out from Nicole (Sydney Meyer) that she will soon be banished from the group.

This episode is a side trip into the story of the Daughters of the Amazons, another point of significant departure from the comics. In the comics the Daughters are led by a feminist intellectual named Victoria. She is replaced in the TV version by Roxanne (Missy Pyle), who claims to be a former homicide detective, and about whom we learn a great deal in this episode. Previously, we saw how Yorick’s sister Hero (Olivia Thirlby) was persuaded to join Roxanne’s cult. This time it’s Nora (Marin Ireland), the former press liaison for the deceased President Cunningham, who has membership issues.

In the first episode, we saw the pre-Event President taking target practice and insisting that Nora take a few shots even though he knows she’s never held a gun in her life. In this episode, Hero’s best friend Sam (Elliot Fletcher) is confronted with a similar situation when Roxanne insists he take target practice with the rest of the group. He accedes reluctantly, but leaves the group that evening. (Sam is all right, though. He happens upon an abandoned school and Principal Hetty Blackwell (Nicky Lawrence), an unreasonably optimistic person who maintains the school, convinced that someday the children will return.) Y:THE LAST MAN – Season 1 Episode 9 – SPOILERS

Diana Bang

Planning a date with Dominique, Dr. Mann asks 355 for fashion advice.

A few episodes ago (Episode 5), when Dr. Mann (Diana Bang) told Yorick (Ben Schnetzer) they had to go to San Francisco, he remarked: “Maybe on the way, may I suggest sunny Ohio?”. In parallel with the comics, Agent 355, Yorick, and Mann are (loosely) held hostage in the fictional town of Marrisville, Ohio by self-liberated prison inmates, while, unknown to them, the Daughters of the Amazon are only a few miles away. Yorick’s sister Hero (Olivia Thirlby) is traveling with the Amazons and things are pointing toward a partial reunion of the Brown family soon. Continue reading →
