The last thing Niamh does is take them to the back of the garden. <em>&#8220;Maeve believed in the old ways,&#8221;<\/em> she tells them, pointing to an opening in the fence.  <em>&#8220;Every evening, before sunset, she&#8217;d leave a blood offering here&#8230;a little slice of liver or some such for the little people.&#8221;<\/em>  Asked which little people, she explains.  <em>&#8220;Not Leprechauns, exactly.  Some call them the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/display\/10.1093\/oi\/authority.20110803095810496;jsessionid=896AF91B553962A653721922B22049B2\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Far Darrig<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/vampire_mythology.en-academic.com\/550\/Redcap\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Redcaps<\/a>.&#8221;<\/em>  Niamh offers to continue making the daily offering on their behalf, but Maya insists on doing it herself. It rains a lot in Ireland, so fixing the roof becomes a priority. There they meet <strong>Father Brendan<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0528297\/bio\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Finbar Lynch<\/a>) a priest with a scary smile who is not pleased to learn that this pregnancy is Maya&#8217;s second, and that her first was aborted. The priest tells them that many years ago Maeve had a child who vanished without a trace. (Niamh gives an account of things that conflicts with both the Priest&#8217;s story and <a href=\"https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/behind-every-tree-is-a-cutting-machine\/maeve-tombstone-unwelcome\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maeve&#8217;s tombstone<\/a>.) Later, in a possibly unrelated incident, <strong>Rory<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/decadenttheatrecompany.ie\/actors\/lalor-roddy\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lalor Roddy<\/a>) walks his dog by the church while singing a version of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.horntip.com\/html\/songs_sorted_by_name\/irish_french_letter.htm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Ancient Irish French Letter<\/a>&#8220;.  Then he and his dog Molly both go missing.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie has more trouble coping with that London home invasion than his wife does, and Maya does not entirely understand the changes it has made in him.  When she insists on going deeper into the woods to search for Rory&#8217;s missing dog, his overprotectiveness finally gets to her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MAYA:<\/strong>  <em>&#8220;You shout more, you know, since that night.  You shout more, and you&#8217;re punching things.  That&#8217;s not the Jamie I know.  I married a nice guy.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>JAMIE:<\/strong>  <em>&#8220;And look where that got me.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>MAYA:<\/strong>  <em>&#8220;Yeah, I was beaten, too, but you don&#8217;t see me&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>JAMIE:<\/strong> <em> &#8220;And I had to watch.  I had to watch.  And they threatened you and my baby and I couldn&#8217;t do a thing.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She is more than a little surprised that her husband would view himself as a frustrated defender of the family.  When he says they are going home and he is going to the pub, she does not follow.<\/p>\n<p>The Redcaps, it turns out, are what Jamie aspires to be.   Conjured by circumstance and hired to fix the roof, <strong>Colm Whelan<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000538\/bio\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colm Meaney<\/a>) and his family of tradespeople are a wonderfully and revoltingly strange bunch.   When <strong>Eion Whelan<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kristian_Nairn\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kristian Nairn<\/a>) attacks Maya, the <i>Far Darrig<\/i> come to her defense. <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13330\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/behind-every-tree-is-a-cutting-machine\/colm-meaney-hannah-john-kamen-douglas-booth-unwelcome\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13330\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13330\" src=\"https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/colm-meaney-hannah-john-kamen-douglas-booth-Unwelcome-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"Colm Meany (Daddy Whelan) introduces himself, to Maya and Jamie - Unwelcome\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/colm-meaney-hannah-john-kamen-douglas-booth-Unwelcome-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/colm-meaney-hannah-john-kamen-douglas-booth-Unwelcome-1024x622.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/colm-meaney-hannah-john-kamen-douglas-booth-Unwelcome-150x91.jpg 150w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/colm-meaney-hannah-john-kamen-douglas-booth-Unwelcome-768x466.jpg 768w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/colm-meaney-hannah-john-kamen-douglas-booth-Unwelcome.jpg 1026w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>&#8220;Daddy&#8221; Whelan<\/strong> (Colm Meaney) introduces himself to the new arrivals<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jonwright.info\/about\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Wright<\/a>, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mark Stay, told Grant Hermanns of <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/unwelcome-movie-jon-wright-douglas-booth-interview\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Screen Rant<\/a> that they could have taken the film in other directions. <em>&#8220;You could have been kind of drawn into the more goofy, comical elements of the goblins,&#8221;<\/em> he explained. <em>&#8220;And there&#8217;s things that they could have done that would be tempting that would kind of bump you out of the reality of the film.  Equally over here with the thing that happens to Jamie and Maya&#8230;there&#8217;s a version of that which is quite dark and morbid, and maybe even bleak and a tiny bit depressing, almost like a gritty real version of that story. I didn&#8217;t want to go there either.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unwelcome_(film)\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UNWELCOME<\/a> starts off slowly and ends with a bang.
