Set in Montreal instead of Paris, it is (fundamentally) a three character story.  <strong>Anne<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HeleneJoyOfficial\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Joy<\/a>) is Anna from the novel.  <strong>Safiye<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/liane.balaban\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lianne Balaban<\/a>) corresponds to Sophy the Governess, and Anne&#8217;s sister-in-law  <strong>Charlotte<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/7G36TbK68bKfwVnlo2iHx6\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gabrielle Lazure<\/a>) can be regarded as an alt-universe version of the Dowager Marquise de Chantelle.  Or, alternatively, the three might be <em>Artemis<\/em> (Goddess of the Hunt), <em>Athena<\/em> (Goddess of Handicrafts), and <em>Hera<\/em> (sister and wife of Zeus).  However one interprets them, everything each of them says must be attended closely. It touches upon issues of class, of gender, of power, and a woman&#8217;s place in the world &#8212; what we give up within ourselves in order to feel safe.&#8221;<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>Anne is an archer who almost made it to the Sydney Olympics in 2000, and is scheduled to marry <strong>David<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthony_Lemke\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Lemke<\/a>), someone her late husband <em>Fraser<\/em> (who was killed years ago in a hit-run accident) had known since childhood.  Her stepson <strong>Owen<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/aidanritchie_lilfiery1\/?hl=en\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aidan Ritchie<\/a>) brings his girlfriend <em>Safiye<\/em> to visit Anne and her ten-year-old (?) daughter <strong>Emma<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/harriette.legault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" >Harriette Legault<\/a>, just prior to Anne&#8217;s scheduled wedding. <\/p>\n<p>It is possibly significant that Safiye goes alone to the cinema to see Jean-Luc Godard&#8217;s 1960 film <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/movies\/details?id=KuBCXRtFvO8\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00c0 bout de souffle<\/a> (<em>Breathless<\/em>). <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25093\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/bows-and-flows-of-angel-hair\/frank_schorpion__raissa_beaudoin__womanincar-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25093\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25093\" src=\"https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/frank-schorpion-raissa-beaudoin-Woman-In-Car-350x217.jpg\" alt=\"Frank Schorpion as Albert and Raissa Beaudoin Jeanne - Woman In Car\" width=\"350\" height=\"217\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25093\" srcset=\"https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/frank-schorpion-raissa-beaudoin-Woman-In-Car-350x217.jpg 350w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/frank-schorpion-raissa-beaudoin-Woman-In-Car-775x480.jpg 775w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/frank-schorpion-raissa-beaudoin-Woman-In-Car-250x155.jpg 250w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/frank-schorpion-raissa-beaudoin-Woman-In-Car-768x476.jpg 768w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/frank-schorpion-raissa-beaudoin-Woman-In-Car.jpg 1005w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anne (coincidentally?) encounters <strong>Albert<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_Schorpion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank Schorpion<\/a>) and <strong>Jeanne<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm9756538\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ra\u00efssa Beaudoin<\/a>), two old friends of her late husband, when she follows Safiye to the theatre<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At the film&#8217;s outset we are presented with a Wharton quote from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/5261.A_Backward_Glance\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A BACKWARD GLANCE<\/a>, not about THE REEF, but instead about how she created the heroine of an earlier novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/284\/284-h\/284-h.htm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">THE HOUSE OF MIRTH<\/a>:  <em>&#8220;A frivolous society can acquire dramatic significance only through what its frivolity destroys.&#8221;<\/em>  (The continuation of that quote is:  <em>&#8220;Its tragic implication lies in its power of debasing people and ideals.&#8221;<\/em>) Rose&#8217;s use of that quote gives enhanced importance to the following bit of dialogue:<\/p>\n<p><strong>CHARLOTTE:<\/strong>  <em>&#8220;Do you think my mother was not left alone with me and Fraser?&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>ANNE:<\/strong>  <em>&#8220;That was 60 years ago.  Things have changed.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>CHARLOTTE:<\/strong>  <em>&#8220;Nothing has changed. I&#8217;d walk down Laurier, and there would be these perfect women in cars, waiting. Is this their only time alone? Are they waiting for their kids? Waiting for someone else?&#8221;<\/em>  <\/p>\n<p>Original music for the film comes from  Swedish-Canadian indie rock band <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thusowls.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">THUS OWLS<\/a> (Erika and Simon Angell).  &#8220;<strong>Lovers Are Falling<\/strong>&#8220;, the song heard over the closing credits and the short scene that follows them, was nominated for <em>Best Original Song<\/em> at the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academy.ca\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Screen Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><center>WOMAN IN CAR can be <a href=\"https:\/\/tubitv.com\/movies\/671851\/woman-in-car\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">streamed on TUBI<\/a>.<\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WOMAN IN CAR (Femme.
