What little she has written soon becomes relevant (if not accurate). <em>&#8220;Suffering,&#8221;<\/em> she writes, <em>&#8220;is something that is passed from one generation to the next, like flexibility, grace, or colourblindness.&#8221;<\/em>  Yoli&#8217;s husband calls asking her to sign the divorce papers, which is something she has been avoiding, because the message is reluctantly delivered by her daughter <strong>Nora<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amybeth_McNulty\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amybeth McNulty<\/a>). Yoli replies: <em>&#8220;No.  None of this strikes me as a cry for help.  There are people who want you to live, so it would seem you have enemies who love you.&#8221;<\/em>  <\/p>\n<p>Elfrieda says that her doctors seem to equate intelligence with the will to live. (Elf&#8217;s intellect is subtle.  Yoli remembers that, after she broke up with &#8220;that guy in Montreal&#8221; and was living alone, Elf sent her a quote from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Val%C3%A9ry\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Val\u00e9ry<\/a>, one letter each day, one word in each letter: <em>&#8220;Breath.  Dreams. Silence.  Invincible calm.  You will triumph.&#8221;<\/em>)   <\/p>\n<p>But it is Yoli who makes the darkly humourous repartee between the sisters the highlight of the film, though the relevance of what she says is sometimes less-than-obvious.  For instance, she says that <em>&#8220;continents drift apart at the same rate that fingernails grow.&#8221;<\/em>, and that is wrong most of the time. In one of them, Jake is entirely unassertive about being displaced from the home he had built with his own hands.  In another, a Mennonite elder is telling him that his fifteen-year-old daughter Elfrieda (Elf for short) should not be permitted to go to college and study music because it might give her ideas.  Dad is a little bit assertive in this one.  In the living room, Elf tries to drown out the conversation by playing Rachmaninov&#8217;s <em>Prelude in G Minor<\/em> loudly on the piano, while, in the kitchen, Yoli&#8217;s mother <strong>Lottie<\/strong> (Mare Winningham) vents her frustration on a piece of chicken, relentlessly pounding it into submission.   <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25073\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/where-can-we-live-but-days\/dov-tiefenbach-in-all-my-puny-sorrows\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25073\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25073\" src=\"https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/dov-tiefenbach-in-all-my-puny-sorrows-350x188.jpg\" alt=\"Dov Tiefenbach as Jake - All My Puny Sorrows\" width=\"350\" height=\"188\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25073\" srcset=\"https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/dov-tiefenbach-in-all-my-puny-sorrows-350x188.jpg 350w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/dov-tiefenbach-in-all-my-puny-sorrows-775x417.jpg 775w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/dov-tiefenbach-in-all-my-puny-sorrows-250x134.jpg 250w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/dov-tiefenbach-in-all-my-puny-sorrows-768x413.jpg 768w, https:\/\/areathirtythree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/dov-tiefenbach-in-all-my-puny-sorrows.jpg 1151w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dov_tiefenbach\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dov Tiefenbach<\/a> as <strong>Jake<\/strong>, the least horrible of Yoli&#8217;s lovers, whose occupation suits his mechanistic approach to life.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The mechanic tasked with repairing Lottie&#8217;s car after it breaks down (poetically, in front of a church) turns out to be <strong>Jason<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dov_Tiefenbach\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dov Tiefenbach<\/a>), someone Yoli went to school with.  In high school, she nicknamed the guy <em>Sad Jason<\/em> because of his obsession with a failed relationship, so it is worth noting that, according to Lottie, the primary emotion evoked by the books that Yoli writes is sadness. <\/p>\n<p>Jason also studied creative writing but did not graduate (hence his current occupation).  The mechanic compares the writing process to the cleaning of septic tanks, and his approach to creativity is mechanical, much like the technique applied by <strong>Dr. Johns<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Roach\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Roach<\/a>), the psychiatrist treating Elfrieda. When Yoli wonders why she would ask that, Nora replies: &#8220;Because you seem unhappy.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Not quite everyone dies in this story, and more recent generations of Elfrieda&#8217;s family seem to have been spared the gloominess of the rest of the clan. During the eulogy at Aunt Tina&#8217;s funeral, an unidentified child mistakes Tina&#8217;s ashes for a toy. <\/p>\n<p>Yoli&#8217;s daughter Nora makes an effort at contrariness to keep her mother from sinking into the family malaise.  But it is Elf who provides Yoli with inspiration for her latest book, which seems to end on an optimistic note with two sisters wearing welding masks sit in a field, having just viewed a total solar eclipse their father has told them about. <\/p>\n<p><strong>ELF:<\/strong>  <em>&#8220;The path of totality passed over us in the early afternoon.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>YOLI:<\/strong>  <em>&#8220;The next one&#8217;s not supposed to be for 1500 years, or something like that.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>ELF:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;Then I guess I&#8217;ll miss it,&#8221;<\/em>.<br \/>\n<strong>YOLI:<\/strong>  <em>&#8220;Yeah, then I guess I will, too.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>ELF:<\/strong>  <em>&#8220;Maybe not.
