SCOOBY-DOO and SCOOBY-DOO 2

SCOOBY-DOO (2002)

After an angry break up, the Mystery Inc. gang are individually brought to an island resort to investigate strange happenings. While there, they sort out their problems and reunite.

SCOOBY-DOO 2: MONSTERS UNLEASHED (2004)

Mystery, Inc. attend the opening of the Coolsville Museum of Criminology as Guests of Honour, and it is promptly attacked by many of the villains the group has previously vanquished.

TRIVIA

These films differ from the original Hanna Barbera cartoons. The major complaint from die-hard Scooby fans is that rather than debunking the supernatural, these films embrace it. The second film brought back some of the monsters from the TV series, such as the Black Knight, the 10,000 Volt Ghost, and Chickenstein.

Isla Fisher

Isla Fisher (Mary-Jane) was required to wear a blonde wig because she is a natural redhead. Gellar was to be the only redhead in the movie. Frank Welker, the voice of Freddy Jones in the cartoons, voices to one of the "creatures" in the first film. Both films were directed by Raja Gosnell.

Daphne resides at 9000 Easy Street, Coolsville Ohio. There actually is a Coolville, Ohio (no S in the middle) but it is located in a somewhat remote area near the West Virginia border.

Fred Jones is named after Fred Silverman, who insisted the character be named after him or CBS wouldn't pick up SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU?

The name "Scooby Doo" originally was derived from Frank Sinatra's song "Strangers In the Night". The cartoon was to be named TOO MUCH before Fred Silverman decided to go with the Sinatra scat lyric.

The "Scooby Gang" includes: Fred Jones, Velma Dinkley, Norville Rogers, and ScoobyDoo. It is also a reference to Buffy Summers and her sidekicks (Xander, Willow, and their lovers) in Buffy the Vampire Slayer..

The first Scooby-Doo film played in 3,447 theatres in the US and grossed $153,294,164. iT was shot entirely in Australia at Bond University, Queensland, Australia. That is 535 km. north of Swans Crossing in New South Wales, which is the only place actually called Swans Crossing (which is also the name of the TV show in which gellar starred in 1992). The second Scooby film was shot entirely in Canada. It played in 3,312 US theatres and grossed $84,216,833. The combined international gross for the two films was $457,479,551.

SCOOBY DOO (computer-generated animation)

Scooby-Doo

Scooby Doo is a fawn-coloured Great Dane but without the black mask that is characteristic of that colour of the breed, and Scooby has a long tail that is also uncharacteristic. Like all Great Danes, Scooby likes people, cats, and all other animals. His ancestors are probably from Denmark, although some think the breed originated in Germany. Great Danes are very tall (the tallest currently being 109 centimeters from paw to shoulder).

According to The American Kennel Club: "The Great Dane combines, in its regal appearance, dignity, strength and elegance with great size and a powerful, well-formed, smoothly muscled body. It is one of the giant working breeds, but is unique in that its general conformation must be so well balanced that it never appears clumsy, and shall move with a long reach and powerful drive."

ACTION FIGURES

Scooby-Doo Action Figures

Many action figures have been created for Scooby Doo characters, including some Daphne Blake Barbies. A few of them are pictured above. Not only the main characters, but also some of the "monsters" have been represented this way in varying combinations.

The Scooby-Doo 1 & 2 Collection (Family Double Feature) is available on DVD and Blu-ray. Both films can be purchased from Apple TV.

DAPHNE ANNE BLAKE (Sarah Michelle Gellar)

Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne Blake

Daphne seems to enjoy danger. She is somewhat vain, (she hates it when fog ruins her hair), very good with a camera (always has one handy), and she can fly a helicoptor. A good student, she aspires to the writing of mystery novels. The Blake family fortune was made by Daphne's father with a product called Blakes Bubbles. Their mansion includes a zoo, horse stables and an outdoor pool with a marble top that converts into a dance floor.

Relatives include her parents George and Elizabeth Blake, Uncle Matt, John Maxwell, Aunt Olivia Derby, Cousin Jennifer, and a nameless uncle who directs films. Their butler is named Jenkins.

Daphne wore lavender leather Go-Go style boots, the style of which has been popular since the 60s. Supposedly Gellar (shoe size 6.5 US) hated wearing them during filming, but the style worked nicely for her. The booots had a four inch heel with a half-inch platform, so Gellar wore boots with low heels for action scenes.

FRED JONES (Freddie Prinze Jr.)

Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred Jones
Fred is the son of Skip and Peggy Jones. Skip Jones is the Mayor of Crystal Cove. His uncle Eddie is editor of the National Exaggerator. Another uncle, The Count von Jones, runs a museum and lives in a castle that neighbors a coffin factory. And his Uncle Carl runs a cheese shop near Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. He has two more uncles, one in the Air Force, and one in the Marines.

Fred is perhaps less intelligent than the rest of the gang. He used to blame every crime on the neighborhood bully, Red Herring, though Mr. Herring was seldom actually responsible. In the beginning, Fred wore an orange ascot, but by the 90's the ascot was gone. Fred works out regularly and is quite muscular. He speaks French badly. Somehow, he is the leader of the group.

His natural hair color is unknown. His hair has been both blonde and brunette. His father's hair is brown.

VELMA DINKLEY (Linda Cardellini)

Linda Cardellini and Sarah Michelle Gellar - Scooby Doo

Velma Dinkley is a native of Ohio, though she apparently lived in Texas for a time. She is extremely intelligent, somewhat myopic, and generally dresses in a pleated brown miniskirt, orange sweater, and glasses. Her parents are Dale and Angie Dinlkey. She has a younger sister Madelyn, whose nickname is "Doe-eyed Dinkley". Aunt Meg and Uncle Evan live in Banning Junction, Ohio. Cousin Marcy is a student of mechanical engineering and was born on Halloween. Other relatives include Uncle Dave Walton, Aunt Thelma, and Uncles John, Cosmo, Elmo and Ted. The authors of SATURDAY MORNING FEVER, Kevin and Timothy Burke, suggested (pp 105-111) suggested (possibly tongue-in-cheek) that Daphneand Velma were a lesbian couple.

NORVILLE (SHAGGY) ROGERS (Matthew Lillard)

Matthew Lillard

Shaggy Rogers is tall and thin, with dirty blonde hair and a goatee. He usually wears a green t-shirt with brown bell bottoms. He has a taste for odd food combinations. The official explanation of this is that his first toy was a garbage disposal. Shaggy has had fleeting encounters with several females, including Velma. and Velma's younger sister. Scooby is always relieved when these flirtations end. Shaggy and Scooby are known for their cowardice in the face of danger, but their cowardice causes them to be capable of great feats of physical strength.

Shaggy's parents are Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Chastain Rogers. Mr. Rogers is a cop. Shaggy's younger sister Maggie, nicknamed Sugey, is married to a man named Wilfred. Shaggy, too, has a lot of Uncles. They are: Uncle Shagworthy (rich guy), Uncle Beauregard (southern gentlemam), Fearless Shagaford (Detective), and Uncle Albert Shaggleford (inventor). Clearly, these uncles are on his mother's side, and clearly that part of the family is rather creative about how they spell the family name.
