Sarah Michelle Gellar - Ringer
Sarah Michelle Gellar - Ringer

Gellar plays twin sisters Bridget and Siobhan Kelly. While Bridget Kelly was stripping in a club owned by Bodaway Macawi (Zahn McClarnon) in Rock Springs, Wyoming, she sees Macawi murder someone. Rather than risking her life by testifying against him, Bridget travels to New York and asks her estranged twin sister Siobhan for help. (The sisters estrangement stems from the death of Siobhan's young son Sean in a 2005 auto accident in Reno, Nevada. Though Bridget was driving the car, the accident was not her fault.) Sean's father was Dylan (Misha Collins) and he will not appear until "Whores Don't Make That Much" (Episode 14).

Siobhan meets her sister on a boat and fakes her own death. Believing Siobhan drowned, Bridget assumed her sister's identity to throw the FBI and Macawi off her trail. Complications quickly arise, because Siobhan had been having an affair with her best friend Gemma's husband Henry (Kristopher Polaha) for about a year. Her stepdaughter Juliet (Zoey Deutch) hates her because Siobhan had an affair Andrew (now her husband) while he was married to his first wife.

Bridget is a recovering addict, and regularly attends Narcotics Anonymous meetings. Her sponsor in Wyoming was Malcolm Ward (Mike Colter) who is in love with her, and followed her to New York City.

Almost immediately after Bridget begins her masquerade, someone tries to kill her, and it is not immediately certain which twin he is trying to kill.

REFERENCES TO THE ARTS

Michelle Stafford’s character is called Peggy Lewis. In Lambertville, NJ there is the Peggy Lewis Gallery which is named after an artist and critic who helped start a network of local artists there. The law firm that Siobhan contacts about potential divorce proceedings was Pierce, Zimmerman, and McDonald. Waldo Peirce was “the American Renoir”, and a friend of Ernest Hemingway. Leo Wrye Zimmerman was a Louisville, Kentucky artist. He started the Society for the Arts in that city. And Peter McDonald is a well-known Japanese/American artist now living in London. Peggy Lewis’ husband works for Deltona and Avercamp. Hendrick Avercamp was a 16th century Dutch painter who specialized in winterscapes. Mary Curtis (Amber Benson's character) is also the name of a San Francisco impressionist painter who was a member of the Worcester Group in the 1890’s.

PEONIES IN PARIS

At the end of episode ten, Bridget and Malcolm find a note in Charlie’s apartment. It says “Siobhan, pivoine 419”. Pivoine is French for peony. 419 is a Paris telephone exchange. Also in Paris there is a Chinese restaurant and a Vietnamese restaurant each named Pivoine. The term is also attached to a classical Chinese Opera, The Peony Pavilion, which centers on the love story of Liu Meng-mei (Willow Dreaming Plum), a young student, and Tu Li-niang, the daughter of a high official in southern Kiangsi. It is a long play, with fifty-five scenes. Amber Benson makes a brief appearance in the episode as Mary Curtis, a stripper who was also an informant for FBI Agent Machado (Nestor Carbonell). Benson tweeted on 29 November 2011: "Yes, you must watch @RingerCW tonight in order to see my non-existent skirt...very Bridget Jones-y of me, having a skirt off sick, that is."

BRIDGET'S DREAM WEDDING

The wedding scene below is from a dream sequence (Bridget's). A Gellar character has worn a wedding dress only once before, and that was in Angel's dream sequence in the Buffy episode "The Prom".

THE GREAT CONSPIRACY

Episode 12, What Are You Doing Here, Ho-Bag?" introduced Andrea Roth as Catherine, mother of Juliet, and ex-wife of Andrew. Catherine and Andrew's business partner Olivia Charles (Jaime Murray) are revealed to be lovers and co-conspirators in It's Called Improvising, Bitch. Both Olivia and Catherine were eventually arrested for conspiring to kill Bridget. Mr. Carpenter (Jason Dohring), one of Juliet's teachers, participated in Catherine's scheme to defraud Andrew. (In real life, Dohring has twin sisters and twin brothers.)

Tessa Banner (Gage Golightly), was severely beaten in Episode 14. This after she flaunted her new-found wealth. Juliet, thinking that Mr. Carpenter was responsible, begins to regret her involvement in the plot to con money from her father, and sought advice on what to do from the mastermind of the enterprise. Dendrie Taylor. Chase Yi, is Jace, the student who told Juliet about what happened to Tessa. He got his start in the film THE LAKE EFFECT, which starred Tara Summers. His character's name in that film was also Jace.

Nic Robuck (James Ford on One Life to Live), is the guy who Catherine hired to beat up Tessa. In episode 17 he makes a play for Juliet after having a falling out with Catherine over his use of excessive force. Tessa ID's him as her assailant by his arm tattoo.

JULIET MARTIN

Caitlin Custer (left) and Zoey Deutch as Juliet
Caitin Custer (left) and Zoey Deutch as Juliet Martin

The part of Juliet was recast before the series aired, and Caitlin Custer was replaced by Zoey Deutch. In the original trailer there was a fleeting glimpse of Caitlin Custer as Juliet. That footage was removed from subsequent trailers and the scenes reshot for episode one of the show. In Episode 5. Juliet scrawled WHORE across the giant Siobhan portrait in the entranceway. Apparently the portrait was washable and was cleaned up readily. The restoration of the portrait at the end of the episode is highly symbolic. There is an extraordinary performance from Zoey Deutch. Whoever's idea it was to recast this part and give it to Deutch is looking like a genius and must be feeling very pleased with himself right now. The 13 March episode, What We Have is Worth the Pain, was directed by Howard Deutch (Zoey's father).

Juliet Martin attends Zachary Secor High School, located at 1281 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10065. It is unknown just who that school might have been named for, but at the time the show aired there were three notable persons with the name Zach Secor: a high school basketball player for the New Garden Friends Bears in North Carolina, a high school football player for the Binghamton Patriots in New York, and the manager of Fast Foreign Auto Salvage in Duarte, CA.

STUNT DOUBLES

Gellar's stunt doubles were Julia Royter and Laurie Singer.

QUOTES

Gellar told TV Guide that she had some inspiration for playing twins from David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow.

"Ross and Russ — Rachel's new boyfriend — were just genius," Gellar told interviewer William Kec. "And of course no one did twins better than Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe and Ursula."

In a TV Guide interview (no longer online) Michelle Stafford described her character, Peggy Lewis:

"My character is really nosy and very much in your face, one of those me, me, me types who talks a mile a minute. She runs into Siobhan, who is really Bridget, and has no idea why Siobhan doesn't recognize her. They have this very fun encounter in an elevator. Then my character sees 'Siobhan' going into a meeting with a divorce attorney and can't wait to tell her husband."

Kristoffer Polaha, who was Dylan in the ANGEL episode "Billy", described his Ringer character Henry Butler:

"I play a character named Henry Butler...Henry is a writer, born in Manhattan, and came to early fame as a writer, but hasn't really followed it up with anything. So when we meet him in the pilot he is an unsuccessful writer. He has little interest in the aristocracy of Manhattan but the woman he's married to is infatuated with it and has worked her way into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, Making Henry even more miserable."

ELIZABETH HIGGINS CLARK

In Episode 21 of Ringer, Elizabeth Higgins Clark played a hospital nurse. She was also part of the cast of the 2002 TV movie "Lucky Day" (credited as Elizabeth Clark) in which Mary Higgins Clark on whose short story the film was based, had a cameo. It is not known if the two women are related.

Siobhan's driver's license
Siobhan's driver's license

In the original trailer, Siobhan's drivers license gives her address and uses Gellar's height, eye colour, and birthdate. By the time episode one aired the birthdate on the license had been changed to 30 September 1979. The license is scheduled to be renewed on 14 April, but in New York, drivers licenses are renewed on the birthdate of the driver. Rock Springs, where Bridget Kelly lived, is a real place and is about 320 kilometers east of Salt Lake City, Utah along I-80. The zip code on her drivers license is correct, but there is no Sage Street in Rock Springs. The return address on the envelope (pictured below) belongs to Siobhan, but the suite number is incorrect.

The receptionist in the office of Dr. Anabel Morris (episode 9), was played by Ginger Williams. Williams had a small part in the Buffy episode "Becoming - Part 1". She was also Clorissa in Cruel Intentions.

Ringer staff writer Jay Faerber also wrote the IDW comic "Angel Spotlight On Conner #1" (2006).
