SWANS CROSSING PAGES

SWANS CROSSING aired 29 June to 25 September 1992 and Ran 13 weeks (65 episodes) in syndication. 50 episodes ran on USA network in 1993-94. The show was created by Ned Kandel and Mardee Kravit and taped at Kaufman Astoria Studios in New York.

Rutledges and Swans

Sandy Swan and Sydney Rutledge were born on 13 March 1978 at approximately 11:45 pm at Swans Crossing General Hospital during the "Great Flood". They therefore have the same Horoscope (birth chart). Rumours that the two were switched at birth are persistent. Sydney's mother, Mayor Margaret Rutledge (Ziska Beveridge) is the daughter of S.O.R and Cyrus Rutledge(buried in the town cemetery). She is the mother of Sydney Orion Rutledge (Sarah Michelle Gellar). There is no reference in the series to Sydney's father, and one wonders what could makeeveryoe refuse to mention him (or his side of the family) at all. As the show begins, Mayor Rutledge is up for re-election. Sydney's great-great-grandfather founded the Swans Crossing Country Club. Ralph (Donald Symington) is the Rutledges' butler.

Sandy Swan (Kristen Mahon) weighed exactly seven pounds at birth. Sandy has a swan-shaped birthmark on her right foot near her big toe. (The swan faces inward toward her left foot.) The Swan Family have lived in Swans Crossing since at least 1624 (four years after the Mayflower), and Sandy has several brothers and sisters. Swans Crossing is named after the first of the Swan family to arrive. Grant Booth did a hostile take-over of Swans Landscaping, precipitating the family's financial difficulties. Sandy Swan and Owen Fowler make up The Band. Sandy does the singing and plays the triangle. Owen plays everything else. Mila Rosnovsky is the band's backup singer.

The Booths

Carissa Dahlbo and Shane McDermott
Glory and Garrett Booth

Jeremiah Ness Booth was the first Booth in Swans Crossing. The Booth Association Incorporated was established in 1823. The Booths are the oldest family in town, other than the Swans and the Rutledges. Grant Halsey Booth Jr.(Nick Wyman) and Cornelia Booth are parents to Grant Halsey Booth III, Garrett Booth (Shane McDermott), and Glory Booth (Carisa Dahlbo). Garrett is one year older than Glory. Cornelia Booth works at the Atwater Beauty Shop in Swans Crossing.

In episodes 41 through 43, the Baldies become convinced that vital information is concealed in a book of poems written by J.T. and given to Glory by Neil. They kidnap Glory, put her in a laundry sack, and take her to what appears to be an abandoned sewer on the Old Walker Estate. There they bind her and threaten her with snakes. She is ultimately rescued by Barek, who then puts her on the ground not far from where she was being held, and covers her with a sheet. She is soon found by J.T. and Garrett, who have followed a trail of cotton balls left by one of the Baldies, who had an ear infection. After the rescue, Glory showed no signs of trauma. Neil actually had hidden encrypted data on a project of his in that book, but the Baldies never discovered that data.

The snakes used to torture Glory are named Morticia, Otoon, and Dracula. The Snake Master is China. The Snake Wrangler is Todd Vargas.

Walkers and Claytons

Captain Elia Walker (Gerry Bamman) and his daughter Callie Walker (Stacey Moseley) lived in Shanghai and Toyko from 1984 to 1988. They have traveled widely, and have spent time in Antarctica, Thailand, and India. Earlier in his life, Captain Walker mysteriously disappeared for 15 years. It is believed that his father (Callie's Grandfather) went insane and built strange sculptures. The elder Mr. Walker was presumed dead when the family estate burnt to the ground.

The Walkers travel and live in their submarine, The Leda. Callie is a mechanic, and works with Jimmy Clayton at the Tool'n'Die, which was originally run by Fats Weltman (David Wasson) who was later replaced as manager by Barek Browler (William Shanks).

J.T.'s best buddy is Neil Atwater, whoae nicknamed "buckyball" is a reference to the geodesic domes designed by Buckminster Fuller. Fullerenes, a variation of carbon molecules, were named for their resemblance to geodesic domes. A fullerene is any molecule composed entirely of carbon, the atoms of which form a hollow sphere, ellipsoid, or tube. The spherical fullerenes are also referred to as buckyballs.

DeCastros and Rosnovskys

Sophia DeCastro (Mira Sorvino) is 17 years old and a high school junior. Her younger brother Robert DeCastro (Alex Tanaka) aka Bobby, aka Saja the Warrior, aka Saja the Sojouner, has also from time to time been known as Captain Twilight, Super Sleuth Sullivan, and Sullen the Conjuror. Mila's room has 6 TVs on one wall, all of which are hooked up to cameras around the room as well as cable TV and VCR's. Mila's agent is Jack Goldbrick (Jason Culp). The TV show in which Mila Rosnovsky starred before coming to Swans Crossing was called "3 O'clock Dreams".

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY

EPISODES 10 and 11 The Countess remembers Mila's birthday incorrectly and has a surprise party for her some three months too early. She concocts the most embarrassing video invitation possible (featuring Tutu the cocatoo) and sends it to all of Mila's friends.

Shane McDermott, Brittany Daniel, Sarah Michelle Gellar

The party is held at Swans Soda Shop, which is run by Jazz (M.B. Battisti). Everyone but the Countess is miserable until J.T. and Neil rig the rotating birthday cake to spin at too high a speed, spraying everyone with icing and cake. After that, the crowd loosens up.

THE GUY IN EPISODE 14

At the start of Episode 14, there is a brief scene with a waitress (Priscilla Garita) who is never seen again on the show serving a milkshake to a man sitting alone at a table in Swans Soda Shop. The man looks a lot like New York filmmaker Spike Lee.

The guy from Episode Fourteen - Swans Crossing

Both Spike Lee and David Toney (who plays Bryce Atwater) appeared in the 1990 film LONELY IN AMERICA.

THE BIG GAME

EPISODE 15 The 'big game against Newport' is part of the regular season schedule as there is an indication that playoffs are yet to come. T.J. and Garrett competed to be the starting pitcher. Garrett won. We discover that Sasha can't field, but can hit if he pays attention. We also discover that Garrett is not much of a team player.

THE NUDIBRANCH BENEFIT

The Benefit takes up all of EPISODE 35. It is thrown by Countess Rosnovsky in support of Captain Walker's favourite charity. Commonly called a sea-slug, the nudibranch is a soft-bodied, marine opisthobranch gastropod mollusk which sheds its shell after a larval stage. The name is latin for "naked gills", and there are over 3,000 described species. They live at all ocean depths, but are most common in warm, shallow waters. The smallest of them are 20 millimeters long. Strangely, the food served at the benefit consisted mainly of shellfish. No nudibranch species is currently listed as endangered.

BRITTANY DANIEL's Letter to a Fan

Brittany Daniel - letter to fans of Swans Crossing

A letter written to a fan by Brittany Daniel while she was doing Swans Crossing. The letter reads: "Lynne, Just wanted to drop you a line to tell you how much we appreciate all of your support for Swans Crossing. Hope to meet up with you at the Youth Film Awards in L.A. My twin sister and I will be attending the awards, as I have been nominated Best Young Actress on an Off-prime-time Series. I also believe three other Swans Crossing cast members have been nominated as well. Thanks again for all your support. See you soon!
--- Brittany"

CAPTAIN WALKER'S SWAN PERISCOPE

Captain Walker's swan periscope - Swans Crossing
Swan Periscope

Captain Walker's undersea houseboat had a periscope disguised as a swan. This would only work as camoflage in areas where swans live (mostly temperate climates). Swans migrate northward as far as Alaska and Siberia, but few, if any, exist in the tropics.
