KIN – Season 1 Episode 6 – SPOILERS

Fiona Bell - Kin

Angela Cunningham

Eamon Cunningham (Ciarán Hinds) manages to negotiate a two week grace period from his suppliers (at the rate of $140K per day). His new-age-y ex-wife Angela (Fiona Bell),who is dying of cancer and knows (and cares) nothing about of her husband’s recent difficulties, signs him up for grief therapy without explaining it to him in advance. The therapy involves drinking ayahuasca, a psychedelic potion also known as yaje. (In the 1996 X-FILES episode Teso Dos Bichos the stuff was used to summon a jaguar spirit and enforce a curse.) Here, it makes Cunningham puke and resurrects a painful memory from his childhood. (His mother died saving him from drowning.) Angela also tells Eamon that, in the process of writing her will, she discovered there are several things in her name that are not hers, and she wants them taken away so her daughters don’t inherit trouble. Meanwhile, Amanda (Clare Dunne) is also doing things so that her remaining son inherits as little trouble as possible.

Amanda confronts Kem

Viking (Sam Keeley) has enlisted the support of his aunt Birdy (Maria Doyle Kennedy), who persuades Frank (Aidan Gillen) to abandon plans for Viking to turn himself in to the cops. Amanda tells him he is making a big mistake and calmly walks out of the room. She has deduced that Kem (Ryan Lincoln) is the one who is passing information to Cunningham and this sets up the best scene of the episode. On the pretext of getting Kem a new ride, she corners and accuses him. Amanda relentlessly breaks down Kem’s defenses, then, once he admits talking to Con Doyle (Keith McErlean), she lets him go.

Ciaran Hinds - Kin

Eamon Cunningham

The rest of the Kinsellas have apparently not had time to properly adjust to having a price on their heads. Michael (Charlie Cox) gets a call from his daughter Anna (Hannah Adeogun), and agrees to meet her at a restaurant. He goes alone. Predictably, just as the two of them are starting to get along, two gunmen come after them. They are forced to hide in a back room while shots are fired at them through the door, and Michael almost has another seizure. Amanda, who tried to warn Michael (Kem told her Anna had been targeted) picks him up after the ambush, and tells him about Kem. Later, Michael (while intently pondering the boa constrictor) tells Jimmy (Emmett J Scanlan) that he doesn’t want to do anything immediately in retaliation for the attack on himself and Anna, not until he stops being angry.

At the retreat.

Frank makes use of a dating app and sets up an assignation which turns out to be a setup. (He doesn’t have the sense to have his date come to him.) Dotser (Neill Fleming) goes along for security, and is killed. Frank manages to escape, and returns home just in time to watch the cops bust Viking. Amanda goes to the dealership the next morning, posts a sign saying “Closed Until Further Notice“, and calmly waits for the police to confiscate records. Michael tries to call Anna but her phone has been disconnected.

Were the investigation of the Kinsellas to result in the cops finding the stash the Kinsellas stole from him, Cunningham would be out $50 million with no way to recoup, and his suppliers, who seem even nastier than he is, might take action against him.

All episodes of KIN can be streamed on BBC iPlayer, and on SBS in Australia.
