Born of Water and the Spirit
REVIVAL – Episode 107 – Too Many Secrets – (speculative recap) ⁓
The effort of healing Dana’s wounds has left Em (Romy Weltman) near death herself. Ibrahim (Andy McQueen) is surprised to learn that Em is a reviver. He tells Dana: “I will hide her and I will find a way to fix her, okay?” Dana (Melanie Scrofano) calls Jeannie Gorski (Lenore Zann) to babysit her son Cooper (Hudson Wurster). Before Jeannie arrives, Cooper says: “I’m a little scared, Mom,” and Dana asks what’s scaring him.
COOPER: “I don’t know. You got shot and Auntie Em’s really sick. And Jordan touched this big glowey thing then poofed away and now everyone’s gonna find out what Auntie Em did to those people and then Grandpa’s gonna put her in a camp.”
DANA: “Yeah, so, that’s a lot…But I’m going to take care of everything. I promise. And, Coop, I, uh [checks her recently healed wounds] I’m good.”
When she suggests they will eventually try to find his friend Jordan, Cooper responds, firmly: “No. Jordan’s gone. She’s not coming back. But I think it was good for her.”
A city-wide manhunt is on for the reviver who killed the three Check brothers. Prompted by security video from the waraehouse where that happened, Governor Harris (Shauna MacDonald) has summoned the military, and the troops are led by General Louise Cale (Konima Parkinson-Jones), a two-star general who made a name for herself in the ‘Ignant Riots’ in Dublin. (Which Dublin is not specified. Five American states have a city with that name.) All revivers are to be taken into custody. The Mayor’s wife, Diane Dillisch (Precious Chong) is arrested as she and her husband attempt to leave town.
Blaine Abel (Steven Ogg), of Redeemer Radio and The Reverend Blaine Gospel Hour, is taking another approach to the reviver situation. He and his followers have abducted a reviver grandmother named Wanda Peterson (Marcia Bennett), and we see her (via CCTV) tied to a post at an unknown location. Then she is heard to encounter something. “What the hell is that thing?” she says. “Get it away from me! It’s, it’s not mine. It’s — No, no, no, [crying] This isn’t mine.” Electrical crackling is heard, and Wanda falls silent. Neither the ‘thing’ nor ‘it’ are identified, but the voice of a man on the other end of the CCTV connection says “Holy shit. It worked! She’s back in Hell where she belongs!”
Wanda might have met the same ‘thing’ that initiated Tyler Barrow (Luca Villacis) into Blaine’s group of followers, and which burned a pattern into his left hand in “Run Along, Little Lamb” (Episode 1.4).
A news article featured on the bulletin board in Blaine’s radio booth is titled “Local Pastor’s Son Becomes Stigmata Boy“.
The Sheriff is temporarily taken into custody by General Cale. He is soon released, and after having a few drinks with Dana, he helps his daughter elude the soldiers watching the house. Dana then visits May Tao who blindfolds her and takes her for a walk in the woods.
As a last resort, and with soldiers closing in on his hotel, Ibrahim gets Em to drink a sample of water from Moore Creek. The water has a healing effect on Em, and they head for the creek to get more of the stuff. When they arrive she immerses herself in the Creek’s waters. “I remember,” she exclaims. “This is it. This is where I died.” She has flashback visions, first of Professor Weimer (Gianpaolo Venuta), and then of someone else wearing a mask with long, curved horns.
Em looks for Ibrahim, and sees a man wearing a black mask, with Ibrahim lying unconscious behind him.
The masked man turns out to be Jesse Blackdeer (Brandon Oakes), and he brings Em to where he and his Uncle Don (Ray G Thunderchild) live, which is also the place to which May has brought Dana
Uncle Don objects to having “Cypress troubles on tribal land”, and Jesse tells him: “Respectfully, Uncle, their woes belong to us. The families are intertwined and so are our stories.” Two years ago, Jesse was accused of killing his daughter Rose, but Dana let him escape because she believed him innocent. Blackdeer returned to find out who really killed Rose, and was murdered by Brent Gunderson on Revival Day. His body was taken to the crematorium with instructions for it to be disposed of quickly. The burning of Jesse’s body was coincidental with the start of the revival event.
