The Radicalization of Emily
ORPHAN BLACK: ECHOES – Episode 104 – SPOILERS ⁓
Emily (Tattiawana Jones) and Tom (Reed Diamond) sit in a car outside the Lee family residence, talking about music. “You can’t compare Celine Dion to Mariah Carey,” says Tom. “They’re totally different artists.” Emily agrees, and Tom continues: “Word up. I mean, Celine Dion is proof that angels can sing.” They see Jules (Amanda Fix) leave the building disguised as her brother, and are completely fooled. “It’s the kid brother,” says Emily. “I’ve seen his standup online. He’s actually really good. I’m telling you, man, he’s going places.” She suggests Tom look up the routine about the six-toed cat. Tom is suddenly serious, and asks if she likes cat comedy, then smiles and says he’s just messing with her. Emily looks scared of him, and it is unclear why.
After a worrisome conversation with Paul Darros (James Hiroyuki Liao), a dejected Kira Manning (Keeley Hawes) is approached by Emily, who takes her to a warehouse where Darros has Lucy’s trailer stashed. “At least she had a roof over her head,” says Emily. “We thought maybe we’d turn up something that would help us find her, but no luck. Maybe you’ll see something that we missed that’ll help you get to her first.”
KIRA: “Why are you helping me?”
EMILY: “I guess I know what it’s like to be the only one looking out for someone. It weighs on you.”

Kathy Baker as Melissa and Amanda Fix as Jules — Baker will also be Ellen Chenoweth in the sci-fi horror series TEACUP.
After Emily leaves, Kira finds a book called The Philosophy of Identity with a drawing of Lucas on the title page.
Under the influence of a psychotropic drug, Jules and Lucy (Krysten Ritter) reconstruct their shared dream. From the pictures they draw, Tina (Eva Everett Irving) identifies the location as Jamaica Plain, and describes the neighbourhood as the “lesbian capital of Boston” that “got pricey when the university moved in.” Both Lucy and Jules hallucinate a sound that neither can identify which turns out to be a squeaky biplane weather vane on top of the Zeta Rho Beta sorority house.
They are forced to play a variant of beer pong called frozé pong to get the key to Zeta Rho‘s bathroom, which they discover was where the events in their bloody dream happened. They also find out that the former owner of the house is Melissa (Kathy Baker) who lives at a place called Legacy Assisted Living.

“Get in the Car”. This brings to mind Kyle Reese‘s line in TERMINATOR 2: “Come with me if you want to live?”
At Legacy, Nurse Marty (Katherine McNally) takes Jules and Lucy to Melissa, an Alzheimer’s patient who greets them with: “God Bless America, Eleanor, why haven’t you done your hair? It looks awful.” The nurse immediately calls Kira, and tells her Melissa has two visitors and is calling them both Eleanor. Tom has a tap on Kira’s phone, so he and Myung (Georgia Leva) head to Legacy Assisted Living. The two agents sing along to Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back Now” on the car radio with an uncomfortable Emily in the back seat.
Kira gets the message in her car, turns around, and heads for Legacy as well.
Jules and Lucy learn that they are different versions of Melissa’s daughter Eleanor who graduated from Thomas M Manino High School. Melissa says she was proud of Eleanor, and cryptically adds: “After everything, nothing was gonna hold you back.”
Both the Darros people and Jules’ foster mother Neva (Alexandra Castillo) catch up to Lucy and Jules at about the same time. Emily encounters Lucy in a stairwell and, after a short hesitation, allows her to escape. Neva pepper sprays Tom and takes off with Jules. Then Kira arrives and tells Lucy to get in the car. With Myung still chasing her, Lucy has little choice.
On a park bench, Kira begins to explain things. “First,” she tells Lucy, “you should know you were made out of love.”
