Why do the Birds go on Singing?
FAMILY LAW – Season 2 Episode 3 – SPOILERS
Paralegal Cecil Patterson (Brett Kelly) wants to ask receptionist Nina Beasley (Kelli Ogumndson) out on a date, but before he can do that, she reveals her plan to backpack around the world with her father for the next year and a half. Nina and fifty-one others won a class action suit against Dr. Peterson (see episode 1.10) but they almost didn’t because Daniel (Zach Smadu) was caught unawares by Peterson’s financial manipulations. But Abby (Jewel Staite) quickly put things right, indirectly thwarting Cecil’s romantic ambitions, at least for now. (Nina promised to send him a postcard from “every single place” they go.)
Lucy (Genelle Williams) gets a phone message from her friend Alyse (Camille Atebe) saying that book club at El Guapo was cancelled because some members had previous commitments. Lucy was “really looking forward to their fish tacos.” Later, when Lucy picks up takeaway from The Yaletown Keg, she sees Maggie (Ali Liebert) and the rest of the book club having drinks there. Alyse catches up to Lucy as she leaves, and tries to explain.
ALYSE: “I didn’t mean for you to see us out with Maggie.”
LUCY: “You’re my book club. I started our book club.”
ALYSE: “We’re not trying to be mean. It’s hard for us, too, you know? Everything that happened. You and Maggie.
LUCY: “What does that have to do with book club?”
ALYSE: “Maggie is the one who’s pregnant and alone and she needs us more than you do.”
Lucy seems to be under ever-increasing pressure in her personal life.
Abby and Frank (Luke Camilleri) meet with couples therapist Dr. Hailu (Luvia Petersen), and we find out how they met. About three weeks into first-year law school, Frank was riding his bike across campus when Abby, who was preoccupied with reading “Fall on Your Knees” by Ann-Marie MacDonald, walked in front of him. After he swerved and hit a lamppost, Abby nursed him back to health. The sessions with Dr. Hailu also make Abby realize things with Frank will not work out, so she meets him at the Milano Espresso Louunge on Powell St. and tells him it’s over.
Last episode, Harry (Victor Garber) ended his relationship with Crystal (Lynda Boyd) so at the moment, no Svensson is involved in an active relationship, although Daniel seems to have a very close attachment to Craig the Pug. The only happily married person in the office is Jerri Rifkin (Bobbi Charlton), and she seems to be having difficulties with one or two of her kids.
After being upstaged by Harry in the Peterson suit, Daniel gets a consolation prize. He makes Business in Vancouver‘s “Forty Under 40” list.
This week’s new client is Sabine Chalifour (Kate Craven) who is being divorced by her husband Efran Aquino (Nicholas Carella), because, he says, she has joined a cult. We get a detailed and possibly useful description of how cults function, and how to recognize them. Abby is almost fooled into joining, but Lucy makes her see the truth of things. (In the course of the investigation, Abby runs an obstacle course and Lucy demonstrates her archery prowess.) With the help of Vancouver Guardian reporter Sandra Dell (Jacqueline Breakwell), details about the cult are made public. Sabine and Efram are reunited.
In Canada, Season Three will begin airing on Global TV this winter.
