THE ARK – Season 1 Episode 4 – (limited spoilers)

Ryan Adams - The Ark

Angus Medford

Angus (Ryan Adams) discovers that the crystalline substance that dissolved Brice’s glove in Episode Two is something odd. “Whatever hit us is made of a completely unknown element,” he explains. “This is a basic element. Think high school chemistry. The periodic table. Except this element is not on the periodic table. It’s made of something that hasn’t been discovered on Earth, which means it probably doesn’t exist on Earth. That means it’s found somewhere else.” There are not many ways to fit a new stable element into the periodic table. Angus hints that the stuff may have been artificially created, very possibly by extraterrestrials. Continue reading →

THE ARK – Season 1 Episode 2 – SPOILERS

Pavle Jerinic - The Ark

Head of Security Felix Strickland and his unnamed assistant.

Self-appointed Acting Captain Sharon Garnet (Christie Burke) is caught poking around the storage closet where Malcolm Perry (Chris Leask) was murdered. This makes Head of Security Felix Strickland (Pavel Jerinic) suspicious, because the access history for that closet was deleted by someone. Only four people have security clearance high enough to access that data, and Garnet is one of them. Garnet later displays excellent brawling skills when she helps Kirkland break up a fistfight in the mess hall, but it is doubtful that makes him any less suspicious of her.

Two things Garnet says in the course of the episode are notable. Alone in her quarters while gazing wistfully at a photograph of herself and an unidentified person, she says: “I really wish you’d taken the cryopod next to mind like I asked, ’cause right about now I could really use some counsel from someone who understands my situation.” Then later in the story she comments: “We need to get the engines back up to near light speed or we won’t reach Prox B before a one year’s journey turns to ten.”

The event that woke everyone from stasis must also have slowed the ship considerably. Continue reading →

THE ARK – Season 1 Episode 1 – SPOILERS

Christie Burke - The Ark

Acting Captain Sharon Garnet

One hundred years in the future and five years into a voyage to Proxima B, Lieutenant Sharon Garnet (Christie Burke) wakes from cryosleep on the colony ship Ark One because a beam falls on her pod, breaking it open. She hears a siren announcing an impact alert, and awakens the other 150 or so people sleeping in the collapsing bay. (It is a mystery why the impact alert did not automatically wake everyone.) Everyone manages to exit the bay before it collapses except for Susan Ingram (Lisa Brenner), whose pod is pinned under debris. When Garnet decides to wake Captain Lester, who should be in stasis in a separate bay, she discovers that the section of the ship housing command officers and the “mentor class” of scientists is missing. We learn that a “series of malfunctions” occurred while the crew was asleep, and “monitoring cameras went down, so there’s no recording of what happened.” Continue reading →
